How to sign on for the first time

Once you are registered and authorized by HUD to use the FHA Connection, you will use the user ID provided to you (by your Application Coordinator or HUD, depending on your organization type). To sign on:

On the Welcome page, enter your user ID in the User ID field.
In the Password field, as a first-time user, enter the password you provided on your registration form.

(See also Quick Start's User Administration (Application Coordinator) page.)

Password rules

The following rules must be observed in creating and entering an FHA Connection password.

FHA CONNECTION PASSWORDS:

MUST be eight (8) characters in length
MUST contain at least one number, uppercase letter, and special character, e.g., $, &
ARE case sensitive, e.g., if M$ry1xAb is your password, entering m$ry1xab will fail
MUST include numbers, letters, and special characters
EXAMPLES: deL_i2A4 or S$52&rt1 or WyYnt9$H

Password change

You must change your password every 21 days. To change your password, select ID Maintenance at the top of the page. This requires sign on to the FHA Connection. From the ID Maintenance menu, select the Password Change function.

If you have not changed your password within 21 days, you will be required to change it before signing on again to the FHA Connection. If you are a new user, you will need to change your password from the password provided upon Registration. This is a password security measure. Information is also provided on Password reset and sign on problems.

Password reset and sign on problems

If you forget your password, you can reset it using the FHA Connection Password Reset page accessed using the Forgot Your Password? link on the FHA Connection's Welcome page. Following password reset, sign on using the last 6 (six) digits of your Social Security Number. Then, use Password Change to change to a new password from the reset password.

If you have not signed on to the FHA Connection for 90 days, your User ID is terminated. You can be reinstated by your Application Coordinator who will reset your password to the last six (6) digits of your Social Security Number. You will then be required to change your password from the SSN to another password. This is also a security measure.

Retrieving a forgotten user ID

If you have forgotten your HUD-assigned user ID, click the Forgot Your User ID? link on the FHA Connection Welcome page to begin the process of retrieving your ID. Complete and submit the displayed page and follow the instructions provided which are based upon your User ID and the entered information.

Account lockout assistance

As a security measure, if you unsuccessfully enter your password three consecutive times, your user ID (account) is locked, preventing you from signing on to the FHA Connection until you reset your password. The FHA Connection Password Reset page automatically displays. Upon successfully entering and submitting the requested information on this page, your password is reset to the last 6 (six) digits of your Social Security Number. To complete the process, use Password Change to change to a new password from the reset password.

Signing off

To end your session on the FHA Connection, you should sign off of the application. This is a security precaution and helps prevent unauthorized users from accessing sensitive information if you step away from your computer. To sign off, click Sign Off located in the page header. You are returned to the Welcome page of the FHA Connection.

In addition, you are automatically signed off if you do not actively use the FHA Connection for a period of 20 minutes. When this automatic sign off occurs, the last page that you accessed remains displayed (with any previously entered information). However, when you attempt to process the current page or go to a new page, the FHA Connection Welcome page appears and requires that you sign on again. After successfully signing back on, the system responds to your last action (e.g., it processes the page with all previously entered information if you had clicked Send or displays the page you were attempting to access). However, if your sign on attempt is not successful or if you close the browser and then sign on to the FHA Connection, any previously entered information that was not processed must be reentered.
