Field Description
Case Number Prefix Three-character code that begins all HUD-issued FHA case numbers. Prefixes identify the geographic location and field office area for an FHA case.
Prefix Example
Explanation
105 Currently issued prefix. The first two characters, 10, represent the state, Georgia. The third character, 5, represents the Field Office, Atlanta.
131 (retired) Prefix no longer used because all numbers have been issued in that series. A new prefix is established for the geographic area of that field office.
152 (obsolete) Prefix no longer issued. No new prefix established to supersede it.
032 (lender option) (retired) Case number prefix that corresponds to a lender option county that is under two or more field offices. The prefix is no longer used.

Field Office Code

Four-character code identifying the HUD field office related to cases with the corresponding case number prefix.

Field Office Name Name of the HUD field office related to cases with the corresponding case number prefix.
Homeownership Center (HOC) HUD Homeownership Center currently responsible for cases with the corresponding case number prefix. (Homeownership Centers operate in place of the former HUD field offices. However, field office names and codes are still used to describe geographic areas of responsibility.)
State Name and abbreviation of the state(s) corresponding to the case number prefix.
