Post-endorsement Borrower SSN Correction can be used by lenders and HUD personnel to correct the Social Security Number (SSN) of up to five borrowers of a loan (case) endorsed for FHA insurance. An authorized employee of the originator, sponsor, holder, or servicer of the loan can make the correction. The FHA-insured loan must have an Active (A) status in the Single Family Insurance System (SFIS/A43) or the Home Equity Reverse Mortgage Information Technology (HERMIT/P271) system. With the exception of loan assumptions, the case must exist on the active CHUMS database. If the loan was not assumed, the correction is made in SFIS/A43 or HERMIT/P271 and CHUMS. For HECM cases, the correction is only made in CHUMS and HERMIT/P271 since SFIS/A43 does not maintain records for HECM cases. CHUMS and SFIS/A43 changes are made immediately. HERMIT/P271 changes are made overnight. If the loan was assumed, the correction is only made in SFIS/A43.
Each borrower's name and Social Security Number are validated against numerous government records (databases) to determine if they match (i.e., belong to the same person) and the borrower is not deceased. If validation fails, the appropriate HUD Homeownership Center (HOC) must be contacted.
