Case Number Assignment - Business Background

When a borrower applies for an FHA-insured mortgage, Case Number Assignment allows the lender to establish the case in HUD's origination system and be assigned an FHA case number. Before using Case Number Assignment, the lender must gather required information. The FHA Approval Lists menu provides links to supporting information such as FHA-approved appraisers or inspectors. Case Number Assignment begins the process towards insuring the mortgage, or endorsement. The case is considered nonendorsed until a Mortgage Insurance Certificate (MIC) is issued by the FHA. You can access Case Number Assignment through the following sequence of FHA Connection links: Single Family FHA, Single Family Origination, Case Processing, Case Number Assignment, and Establish a New Case.

There are two main parts to Case Number Assignment:

An FHA case number is issued, if processing is successful. Use the case number for subsequent transactions on the FHA Connection. If there is a problem with the information entered, a case number is not assigned and the case is placed on hold (Holds Tracking) until the issue is resolved.
